Angela Brower
Website design for one of the most sought-after lyric mezzo-sopranos
Background
Hailed by The New York Times for her “plush, full sound, yet also youthful brightness”, American mezzo-soprano Angela Brower is one of the most sought-after lyric mezzo-sopranos of her generation. A former member of the Bayerische Staatsoper ensemble, and alumna of their studio, she continues to bring her compelling artistry and musicianship to the world’s leading opera houses and concert venues.
Approach
This brochure site aims to provide a gateway to discovering Angela Browers rich and resonant repertoire and captivating stage presence. Aimed predominantly at leading opera houses and concert venues, I designed a website that would exude a timeless expression of unparalleled virtuosity, where passion and artistry converge.
Design
The design is understandably weighted in favour of photography, but with a balance between a few different details. Punctuating the preference for white and blue-greys there is a flourish of gold accent. Images are overlapped one another and where there is an abundance of space there is large type. These make for a very intentional interesting visual expression, one that confidently builds out the individual personality of Angela, alongside her professional work.
Typeface
Type size, style and typesetting effectively play to the personality of Angela Brower. Headers employ the use of Judson; a serif font who’s characters are conveniently distinguished, even in the italic typeface. This is complimented by the body font Atlas Grotesk, a clean and fresh sans serif which feels spacious and comfortable for extended reading even when set with tight leading.
Imagery
The imagery provides an immediate and consistent visual gesture, striking a balance from what has come before and an expression of tradition and modernity.
The potential of proportionality to appear creative and expressive is explored to its maximum, with images overlapping and running off the screen edges. In this, it draws the eye to details and relationships between image and content whilst maintaining a high degree of elegance.
